Last Dance

How it started

In the early stages of our journey, we set out to test a simple thesis: digitizing how students prepare for exams is worth building for. West University of Timișoara's official bachelor exam exercise book existed only as a static document - useful as a reference, but with no way for a student to track what they actually knew versus what they still needed to study.

We built and shipped the first version of Last Dance in a single day, turning that exercise book into an interactive, free-to-use study platform. The goal wasn't a polished product - it was proof: could we move fast enough to validate real demand before investing further? Within days, hundreds of students were using it, on an interface that was, by design, the bare minimum needed to test the idea.

What we built

Last Dance turns a university's official exam exercise book into a structured, interactive study path: students progress chapter by chapter through the exact curriculum they're tested on, and validate their knowledge through targeted practice tests.

• Chapters organized exactly like the official exam curriculum, so nothing feels disconnected from the source material.
• Three ways to practice: a full randomized exam simulation, targeted practice on chosen chapters only, or a dedicated mode for reviewing and re-solving previously missed questions.
• Progress tracking per chapter and per book, plus a personal statistics dashboard once a student starts testing themselves.
• Multiple official books per faculty, organized by admission year, so content stays in sync with whichever year's book is currently in use.
• Bilingual tracks wherever a faculty itself teaches in two languages - Computer Science at UVT, for example, is available in both Romanian and English.
• A direct link back to the official source exercise book on every page.
• Small learning-environment settings, like randomizing the order answers are displayed in.

How is going

The platform has grown well past its original one-day build:

• Originally built for West University of Timișoara alone, it now also serves Universitatea de Medicină și Farmacie "Victor Babeș" din Timișoara.
• Content moved from one flat list of questions to a structured product - organized per faculty, per language track, and per admission year.
• Real learning tools were added that didn't exist in v1 at all: mistake review, custom chapter practice, per-book progress tracking.
• An actual community formed around it - a Discord server, a feedback channel, and a "buy me a coffee" support link - so students engage with the product on an ongoing basis, not just once.
• The app is actively maintained and versioned (currently v2.3.4), with continuous design and feature investment since the rushed first version, including the light/dark mode and RO/EN language toggle v1 never had time for.

Impact

Traffic on lastdance.app tracks the university exam calendar closely - which is exactly what you'd expect from a tool students reach for when they actually need it, not a habit app competing for daily attention.

Monthly visitors nearly tripled in the run-up to exam day, and - notably - bounce rate improved as traffic grew (33% → 25%) instead of the usual tradeoff of more traffic meaning lower-quality visits. That's a sign the extra students weren't just curious clicks; they stayed and used the tool. Usage then dropped off sharply once the exam had passed, which tracks: the product did its job precisely when it mattered, without needing to manufacture engagement the rest of the year.
